Where dryers lose their touch

Gas and electric models wear out along the same lines. Here are six symptoms homeowners describe on the phone, matched with the parts our techs look at early.

Inspection sheet

Tumbling but no heat

Clothes keep tumbling yet stay cold because a heating element burned through, a gas igniter weakened or a safety fuse opened.

We check
  • Heating element
  • Gas igniter
  • Thermal fuse

Loads taking forever

Clothes need extra time because the moisture sensor misreads, a cycling thermostat sticks or the element only heats part of the way.

We check
  • Moisture sensor
  • Cycling thermostat
  • Element coil

Drum not turning

The motor hums or runs while the drum sits still, which usually means the belt snapped or the idler pulley seized.

We check
  • Drive belt
  • Idler pulley
  • Drive motor

Squeal, thump or rumble

Flat-spotted rollers, a parched rear bearing and worn glides make every load sound like trouble.

We check
  • Drum rollers
  • Rear bearing
  • Drum glides

Nothing happens at start

Silence and a dark panel can point to a faulty door switch, a dead start switch or a blown thermal fuse.

We check
  • Door switch
  • Start switch
  • Thermal fuse

Shuts off partway

The dryer quits before the timer ends when the motor overheats or a temperature sensor sends a false reading.

We check
  • Motor overload
  • Thermistor
  • High-limit thermostat

Dryer codes, decoded

Speed Queen and Frigidaire dryers flash these codes when something interrupts a cycle. Here is which ones you can handle and which need us.

Speed Queen

  • EroTry a reset
    Motor not turning

The control sensed no drum movement. Remove anything jammed in the drum, press a key to clear the code and restart.

  • EcoTry a reset
    Board communication lost

Cut power at the breaker, restore it and try the cycle again. A repeat means a board or harness needs service.

  • EopCall a tech
    Open thermistor

The control sees an open circuit on the heat sensor, so the thermistor, its wiring or the output board needs replacing.

  • E59Call a tech
    Door signal error

The control cannot read the door input, and the output board must be replaced.

Frigidaire

  • E68Try a reset
    Stuck button

A key is stuck or was held down too long. Press each one gently to free it, then restart the dryer.

  • E10Try a reset
    Control memory glitch

Unplug the dryer for a few minutes and start a new cycle. If E10 returns, the control board needs replacing.

  • E25Call a tech
    Thermistor circuit open

The control thermistor or its wiring is open, so the dryer cannot track temperature until parts are tested and replaced.

  • E5BCall a tech
    Heat not rising

The temperature never climbs, pointing to a failed heater circuit, relay or control board.

Warm, dry and quiet again

Lewisville customers on their dryer repair.

Running every towel load twice was costing us a fortune. He tested it, swapped what was worn out and now one round does the job.
Evangeline S.Valley Ridge
That squeal could wake the whole house. Gone.
Murray B.Lewisville Valley
Pressed start and got nothing, not even a hum. I figured the dryer was finished. He tracked it down in no time and explained what tripped it so I know what to watch for.

Before you book a visit

Run through these four checks when your dryer misbehaves. One of them might sort it out.

  • Lint screenPull the screen and clean it before every load; a clogged one stretches drying times quickly.
  • Breaker checkAn electric unit runs on a two-pole breaker. When half of it trips, the drum can still turn with zero heat.
  • Door latchShut the door hard enough to hear a click. A loose latch keeps many models from starting.
  • Sensor barsGive the shiny moisture strips a quick wipe with some rubbing alcohol so the moisture reading stays accurate.

Leave these to us

  • Heating elements and gas igniters
  • Belts, rollers and drive motors
  • Thermal fuses and controls

Each of these repairs comes with a 90-day warranty on parts and labor.
